Chapter 24
The large tide of Globur pushing out from the bioconstruct enveloped Bravo Company. The large Globur swept their beam weapons across the Marines in their hasty positions, disabling or destroying suits outright. A maelstrom of Marine and Globur grenades hid the area from direct view. Sanderson saw that Bravo Company was trying to withdraw to the river as other forces swept in from the flanks to support.
Alpha Company was already pouring fire into the mass of Globur as it spread out over what had been Bravoâs position. Hammys screamed out. The hypervelocity missiles were the only weapon any individual Marine had that could hope to take down one of the large Globur in one shot. Heavy lasers hammered into the large Globurs, seeking a weak point to get penetration. Grenades sped towards designated targets in a desperate attempt to cover Bravo Company.
Umbrella drones lit up the Globurs and concentrated on the leading elements to slow their advance. The Globur were focused on Bravo Company with a purpose, and they gave chase as the Marine suits fled for the river. It wasnât clear if the river would offer any safety at all.
Sanderson saw the orifice the Globur had come out of had now closed completely. They would have to find another way in. Bravo Company suits had entered the river, and the Globur were streaming in after them. The river certainly made it hard for the Marines to engage them. Lasers did not propagate well in a river filled with silt from the many boots and claws churning up the riverbed.
A large group of Globur angled towards Alpha Company with several large Globur among them. Sanderson knew they might overrun the company. They were closing fast. The fire between the two formations was heavy, and the Marine laser bolts were just not penetrating the large Globur. They carried their large weapons with their second set of limbs, which made them much harder to hit. Heavy Globur beams began to take their toll on his Marines as the Globur closed. They would be on top of the company in seconds.
Sanderson leaped into the air using his grav field to carry him towards the nearest large Globur. It was surrounded by the smaller ones. His grav field shifted, making his path erratic and making him hard to hit. One of the beams grazed his legs, and another grazed his arm as his blades slid out.
The large Globur raised its upper arms to shield its eyes, but Sanderson was not after them. His legs were frozen from a beam hit, but he still had full function on his arms. He drove his blades into the large beam weapon the Globur carried. His dead legs swung around, and he used his jump jets to propel him away from the Globur, ripping his blades out of its huge beam weapon.
Sanderson barely hit the ground when the Globurâs beam weapon exploded. Its blinding flash washed out his visual scanners for a moment. The entire area around the large Globur was full of smoking carcasses.
